Doctor of Philosophy in Music

The Board of Regents has recently approved the consolidation of all Ph.D. programs in the School of Music into a Doctor of Philosophy in Music degree with concentrations in Music Education, Music Theory and Musicology. Curriculum guides for each degree as well as the Graduate Handbook are available on-line.

 

COMPOSITION

The Doctor of Philosophy curriculum in Composition is offered to students who show promise as outstanding composers.

The degree requires 78 acceptable hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor's degree (48 hours beyond the master's degree in music).

MUSIC EDUCATION

The Doctor of Philosophy curriculum in Music Education is offered to students who show promise as outstanding researchers and master teachers of music.

The degree is awarded to candidates who complete the course of study with distinction, demonstrating outstanding ability in original research, scholarly study, and excellence in teaching.

The degree requires 83 acceptable hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor's degree (53 hours beyond the master's degree in music).

MUSICOLOGY

The Doctor of Philosophy curriculum in Musicology is intended to develop in students the knowledge, concepts, and techniques for musicological research and to prepare students for teaching music history at the college/university level.

The degree requires 83 acceptable hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor's degree (51 hours beyond the master's degree in music).

The Doctor of Philosophy curriculum in Music Theory is intended to develop in students the knowledge, concepts, and techniques for research in music theory and to prepare students for teaching at the college/university level.

The degree requires 81 acceptable hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor's degree (51 hours beyond the master's degree in music).
