The LSU School of Music will host its annual Concert Spectacular, one of the community's most anticipated events, on Friday, Feb. 10, in the LSU Student Union Theater. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., with a pre-concert fanfare to be played at 7:15 in the Union Theater lobby.
First held in the fall of 1995, this special performance has a threefold purpose - to showcase the high level of musical talent on the LSU campus, to broaden the audience base for future School of Music recitals and concerts, and to raise funds for scholarships.
The one-hour concert is held in a unique "no pause, no applause" format, using every inch of performance space in the theater. As each performing unit finishes, another begins in a different location. Nearly every genre of music taught at LSU will be represented at the concert.
The program will include performances by School of Music faculty as well as by the LSU Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, various student instrumental chamber groups, and a musical theatre performance, among others.
LSU School of Music faculty member Brian Shaw, the organizer of this year's concert, says "we are certainly excited to be returning to the beautiful LSU Union Theater. Longtime fans of the Concert Spectacular will recognize the successful format we have developed over the past decade, but with some surprises this year. As always, there will be something for everyone."
This year marks the return of Concert Spectacular to the LSU Union Theater after being held at various alternative locations since 2008. The premier performance venue at LSU underwent a major renovation and reopened in Fall 2010. But last year's Concert Spectacular was canceled when the LSU campus and much of the Baton Rouge community shut down due to freezing temperatures and inclement weather. Proceeds from the concert will support the LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts' scholarship fund drive, which aims to replace music scholarships being lost to recent budget cuts.
